1. Explanation of the maps
- The loci mapped are described in the RAPD
and MIC Genetics Database.
- The basis for making MIC maps is explained in the Introduction to Tetrahymena Genetics.

- Maximum likelihood orders and map distances (in cM) listed below
(and the corresponding map
coordinates) were obtained by using MAPMAKER. Distances were
corrected for undetected, predicted multiple crossovers
using the Haldane equation.
- Every member of a linkage group shows meiotic linkage at LOD >
3 with at least one other member.
- Only one representative locus is shown for most groups of loci
not yet resolved by recombination ("coincident
loci"). Other members of the group are listed in the RAPD and MIC Genetics Database,
and can be found by searching for the name of the representative
locus.
- Map orders are based generally on a panel of 32 meiotic
segregants; the orders are therefore soft over short
distances. A notable exception is the neighborhood of the mat locus in
2L, mapped with up to 200 meiotic segregants.
- More meiotic segregants (already available) can be typed by
anyone interested in a higher resolution map of
any particular region of the genome.

Linkage groups cannot be assigned to chromosome 5 arms because the
required nullisomic is not available. Linkage
group XX has not yet been assigned a known chromosome for technical
reasons. The 1L.2R and 2L.1R chromosome arm
associations reflect the hypothesis of Bruns, Hanley-Cassidy &
Merriam (personal communication) regarding wild
type T. thermophila strains.
* Linkage group 1L-SP13 was originally assigned to chromosome 1L
but may be in 2R (currently under investigation).
3. Maximum likelihood maps

in scale. See the Map Coordinates page for
exact coordinates with which to draw your
own map. If you download the maps, they will look straight only when
using a font with equal spacing of characters,
such as Courier.
